The Main Library building is closing and services are being transferred to St Mary’s Library, South Street from 2pm on Wednesday 25th May 2011. For progress updates over the summer please visit our project blog at

Intensive planning and activity is continuing to ensure we are ready to hand over the Main Library building to the contractors on Friday 27th May.  As a result of the decision to close the Main Library building on Wednesday 25th at 2pm, the good news is we expect to be able to keep disruption to Library services during the exam period to a minimum.

Preparation for the closure

Book returns: In order to minimise our need to store materials outside the Main Library and to help our re-shelving process, we’d like to encourage all users to return any books they won’t require over the summer to us as soon as they are able.  If you’re taking exams during May, please try to remember to drop off any module related material as soon as your exams are over.

You will still be able to drop materials off at the Main Library after the building closes at 2pm on Wednesday 25th using the external book drop until Thursday 26th at 2pm.  After this time, all books should be returned to our summer service point in St Mary’s Library on South Street.

Service Desk: During the week beginning May 16th, the Main Library Service Desk will not open until 11am each day, Monday-Friday.  This partial reduction in service is necessary to give Library staff time to work on final preparations for the following week’s move.  Self-issue will be available as usual and books can be returned to the Service Desk book drop.  The Service Desk will be open from 9am Monday-Wednesday the week beginning May 23rd.

Our main Service Desk operation during the Summer will run from St Mary’s Library, which will open Monday-Friday 9am-7pm as of Wednesday 25th May.

Please plan ahead!: If you know you’ll need certain material during the summer, please borrow as much of it as you can before we close the Main Library on the 25th of May.  It would help us enormously!

Extended borrowing: All students and staff will be able to apply for an additional borrowing card to allow them to double their borrowing entitlement over the summer.  Additional borrowing cards will be available from Monday 9th May and the cards will remain valid until Friday 14th October.  We’re also increasing the number of times any user can renew an item from 4 to 6 for standard loans and 20 to 30 for multiple copy items.  You should be aware however, that any items on loan will remain subject to recall over the summer.  If you’ve any questions about your borrowing entitlements either before the 25th May or over the summer, please don’t hesitate to contact our Service Desk Staff on 01334 462283 or via email

Library seminar rooms: As of 23rd May the two library seminar rooms will be decommissioned to allow for preparatory redevelopment work. No bookings can be schedule from that date.

Reference Collection:  The Reference collection will be moved out of the Main Library building during the period 11th-12 May to its temporary home on the ground floor of the Bute building.  From the 12th May the collection will be available for browsing in this new location, Monday – Friday, 09:00 – 17:00.  A member of Library staff will be available in the reference collection room during these hours.

Study places:  The temporary study places in the St Mary’s quadrangle area will be available from Monday 30th May (a list is available to view on the redevelopment blog site). Additional study rooms on campus can be booked for student use, by library staff, on an adhoc basis and subject to availability. Before May 30th and after the closure of the Main Library building, study spaces will be available in St Mary’s Library and at the JF Allen Library (top floor of the Physics & Astronomy Building) on the North Haugh.

IT Services Helpdesk:  The IT Service helpdesk will continue to operate out of the Main Library building until 2pm on Wednesday 25th May.  Thereafter, services will transfer to the Ground floor of the Bute building.
