Largest item in the Library, on the move!

February 23, 2011

The largest item in the Library, formerly known as the ‘departmental caber’, was recently moved to its new home in the Library Store on the North Haugh.  The item measures 18 metres long by 2.44 metres wide and is a rolled manuscript, labelled as ‘Curves of the barometer for the year 1843 read off and projected to thousands of an inch, arranged in lunar months. Projected by Serjeant I H Dunn B[rigade] S[er]j[ean]t M[ajor], 1st Assistant M Observatory.  G Buist LLD, in charge Bombay Observatory.’

In order to measure and identify the item, which had been shelved in Special Collections since it was accessioned, required four members of staff to unroll and re-roll it.
